Hummingbirds are fun to attract and watch

Every year in the middle of April, hummingbirds start to arrive here in south central Pennsylvania.

We believe the same hummingbirds return to our feeder year after year.  One day this spring, my wife and I were outside and noticed a hummingbird hovering at the spot where the hummingbird feeder usually hangs during the feeding season.  Needless to say, our hummingbird feeder was found, cleaned, filled with nectar and hung outside the very next day.

During the summer, we have several hummingbirds that visit our property.  We plant lots of flowers that attract hummingbirds.  They sure like to go inside the blooms and retrieve the nectar.  Our humming bird feeder hangs in the flower garden to help attract the little wonders to our birding sanctuary.  Hummingbirds are quite entertaining to watch.

The most important thing to know about hummingbird feeders is to keep them very clean.  If the nectar looks cloudy or black spots are forming on the nectar container, it has gone bad.  In the summer when temperatures exceed the mid 80s; the nectar can go bad in a couple of days.  If your humming bird feeder is in full sun, the nectar can go bad in a day.  Run your hummingbird feeder thru the dishwasher (if allowed) to clean.  Otherwise wash completely by hand with a good set of brushes.  Unless your feeder requires that you fill it full to prevent it from leaking, I would only fill it about 1/4-1/2 full until the activity level picks up.

Keep your hummingbird feeder clean and fresh and just sit back and watch. Hummingbirds are among America’s favorite birds. They are amazingly fragile creatures that give us hours of entertainment and we owe it to them to be good stewards.
