Ruckus Ridge: multiplayer game for Oculus Rift and HTC Vive
Ruckus Ridge by Foreign VR, an indie game that comes from very humble beginnings. This studio’s three-man team is focused on local multiplayer gaming.
From the get go, being a gamer can be a lonely hobby, one that can keep you—the user—in front of a screen for many hours at the time. After the exponential rise of online games and their competitive scene, local multiplayer was widely ignored.
Many people argue that gamers tend to become anti-social, introverted human beings that closely resemble trolls. With virtual reality headsets on the horizon to better enhance this conception, there is a general bad feel on the social scene.
There are certain actions that the gaming industry can and should take to avoid further expanding that misconception. Ruckus Ridge is part of one of those moves. Looking through their short Steam Greenlight trailer, this game is all about parties. Supporting as many as four players at once, one wearing Oculus and the other three standing on the couch against him.
The connected player is standing in the middle carrying a virtual shotgun, trying to find his friends who are hiding inside boxes around a clearing. The cartoonish style of the game does a great job at inducing a relaxed, entertaining atmosphere. Even though the game clearly needs some smoothing out, it is commendable that a three-person studio is able to come up with this idea and make it work.
Games like Ruckus Ridge, Keep Talking and Nobody Explodes are starting to show us the direction in which virtual reality could be heading. This is one of the most creative solutions to the problem that virtual technology poses (that you are alone with a headset on).
