If your home or office security measures have failed you, it might be a user-related fault. When used and maintained properly, professional alarm systems have a much greater chance of catching a thief.

Burglar alarm systems don't work if you don't install and use them properly. People mistakenly believe that any failure or breach of security is the direct result of the technology and not user error. More often than not,Alarm Systems: How To Avoid 5 Common User-Errors Articles carelessness and cutting corners leads to break-ins rather than technological glitches. Here are five things that will weaken your home or office security measures.

1. Deactivated
How can you expect to catch a burglar if you don't activate your security system? People forget their pin numbers, neglect to replace burnt out fuses, or just forget to switch it on every time they leave their home or office. While a threatening sign can ward off some perpetrators, most break and enter crimes involve weeks of preparation. A thief will watch a house for an extended period to memorize the patterns of the inhabitants. If they want it badly enough, the mere suggestion of security will not stop them.

2. No Backup
What is the first thing that most criminals do when breaking and entering? They cut off the power. This method can only be successful is there isn't a charged backup battery. If you haven't checked the charge for several years, or have an outdated model that lacks this feature, it is time to upgrade and test those batteries regularly to ensure effectiveness.

3. Rely on Insurance
Why bother with alarm systems if you already have homeowner's insurance? There are several reasons not to bank on this investment alone. While insurance is useful and definitely recommended, it needs to be amended often depending on your possessions, which is especially true if you own several valuables or collections. These items often fall under special categories and require supplemental policies, so always check the fine print of your contract. Additionally, it can take months before you receive compensation, and if work-related materials were stolen such as your laptop, you simply can't afford to wait.

4. Holes
Any burglar who is willing to cross alarm systems is clever and will find weaknesses. Many people think they will save money by circumventing a professional and installing home security on their own, but unless you're an expert, it is likely that you will miss some key protection elements. Cameras need to be positioned for maximum coverage of the area while remaining hidden from burglars and require ample light source during day and night. Weatherproofing is also important to ensure rain doesn't render your security ineffective.

5. No Maintenance
As previously mentioned, backup batteries need to be tested and shorted circuits replaced, but general regular maintenance is also important. Alarm systems should be tested for effectiveness annually, including examining all wires and connections, checking cameras and cleaning lenses, and a little bit of yard work. It may sound strange, but allowing bushes or trees to overgrow can interfere with your security measures. A branch can block a camera's view or a shrub can provide easy concealment for a burglar who attempts to disarm the system.
