Batteries are perhaps the most widely used source of power in the world, besides electricity. Many items can be used as a backup source, if you are not able to plug something in. In the past, when there were power outages, people relied on lighting candles to get them through the night. Now, you have the option to use flashlights. If you suddenly find yourself sitting in the dark and you know that you paid your bill, grab a flashlight and pop some batteries in it. Now, you can see and do what you need to do while you wait for the power company to restore your electricity.

Another handy item to have in your electrical supply is a smoke detector and a carbon monoxide detector. Each day you hear about how a house fire claimed the lives of people and no one knows how it started or how they weren't able to escape in time. Many times, it comes out later in the investigation that there either wasn't a single smoke detector found in the home, or the smoke detectors couldn't have been working properly. It is extremely important to have a smoke detector on every floor in the home. It is also very important to check them every month to make sure they are working properly. If you find that they are not working, the main culprit is oftentimes that the batteries have died. All you need to do is go into your electrical supply and grab some fresh batteries to put into the smoke detector and you're good to go.

The same goes for carbon monoxide detectors. Carbon monoxide is known as the silent killer. It can seep from your furnace, while you and your family are sleeping and you'll never be the wiser. You don't want something like that to occur. Keep fresh batteries in your carbon monoxide detector and test it every month. You could actually test both the smoke detectors and carbon monoxide detectors at the same time. It only takes a very small amount of action on your part to make your home safe.
