Boiler Repair: 5 Reasons Why You Shouldn't DIY

Some jobs are better left to the professionals, and boiler repair is definitely one of them. There are numerous safety hazards involved, and most of them can lead to an epic explosion or carbon monoxide poisoning.

Many home projects are fun and cost saving, but boiler repair is one DIY job that a novice should never undertake. There are several safety concerns as well as financial risks, but one of the biggest incentives to hand this task over the pros is that they can explode. That's right-- it is one of the few household appliances that will actually destroy your home, sending it up in flames, and spewing shrapnel into the neighbor's lawn. Your life, family, and home certainly aren't worth saving a few measly dollars, but if you are still tempted to pull out the wrench, here are some more reasons not to play Mr. Fix-It for this particular problem. 

1. Pressure Explosion
What happens when you shake a can of carbonated soda and then open it? You'll be treated with a small eruption, which is due to pressure buildup inside of the can. The same thing can happen to your heating system. If there are several broken components such as the relief valve and operator control, the pressure will become overwhelming, resulting in a very large and catastrophic explosion, or at the very least, a nasty steam burn.

2. Burns
Loose parts, accidentally damaging components, or simply not exercising enough caution can lead to some serious third degree burns during boiler repair. Steam or hot water can shoot out, making contact with the skin, or worse, the eyes, and causing painful, irreparable damages. Even professionals are taking a risk when dealing with these devices, so why not pay someone rather than put yourself in a dangerous position? 

3. Fire
Whenever you're dealing with gas there is the potential for starting a fire. Leaving a few oily rags around or other combustible items nearby can result in the entire house going up in flames. And if your heating system catches fire, it is only a matter of moments before the imminent kaboom. If you haven't been down to where it is located in a while, you'll want to exercise extra caution as gas from a leak may have had time to buildup, making the entire area highly flammable.

4. Carbon Monoxide
Are you sure your DIY boiler repair job was successful? One small leak could mean you are exposing your household to carbon monoxide. This gas is odorless, tasteless, colorless, and otherwise practically undetectable by anyone in its presence. Signs of a leak include drowsiness, headaches, and nausea, but often times it is too late. Many people have passed away in their sleep due to carbon monoxide poisoning. 

5. Spills
Probably the least of anyone's worries, spills and subsequent slips are still a concern during any boiler repair job. Losing your footing can result in a hard knock the head, joints or back. If you're alone at the time, it could be several hours or even days before someone can reach you to help. A blow to the head can result in a concussion or even unconsciousness. It's very important that all water or other liquids are carefully cleaned and dried before they can become a danger.
