There are various actions you can take. However, you should concentrate on keeping your yard, flowerbeds, and sidewalks clean at all times.

You should never allow debris to accumulate in your yard. If it does, then it will give a variety of pests a great place to call home. This is especially true if there are sticks and other types of wood lying around. Therefore, you should remove any logs or old stumps you have in your yard area. You certainly do not want to invite a colony of termites to live near your home do you?

A common mistake homeowners make is keeping a stack of firewood around their home. Some even keep it on their front or back porch. Ants and other small creatures will be attracted to this stack of wood, and you may even bring them into your home accidentally. It is best for you to keep firewood stacked off the ground too. Pressure-treated lumber makes a good base for it.

Many people put mulch around their trees, gardens, or flowerbeds, especially as the winter months come rolling around. You should avoid putting mulch around your foundation though. Once again, it will attract pests, and you do not want them staying so close to your home.

If you have an outside pet, you will obviously need to feed it. Do not keep the food and water bowls too close to your home though since pests of all types will be out looking for a new water and food source.

Speaking of water sources, it is also best for you to make sure moisture never accumulates around your home. This will be the perfect breeding ground for mosquitoes during the summer. Check your gutters to ensure they are working properly.

Homeowners who have shrubs and bushes should keep them under control too. Do not allow them to grow too much. Insects like yellow jackets love to make nests in them. Avoid letting tree branches grow over your roof too since larger creatures can use them to walk right over.

Pests will have no problem taking up residence in your home or yard if you provide them with ideal conditions. It is best for you to keep areas outside your home clean and litter-free. If you do not, you may soon have pest problems on the exterior and eventually they may decide to move inside.
