Rodents such as rats and mice can particularly be a problem for homeowners during the winter.  They do not like cold weather; probably just like you.  They will look for various ways to enter your home.  Even if they do not find a way to get in they may chew and gnaw a new entrance themselves.

Roaches will also give homeowners problems.  They invade your home then make a home on the inside of your walls.  The fact they live inside the walls throughout the year means you will need to do whatever is necessary to prevent them at all times.  This certainly means limiting their food and water sources as much as possible.

Ants and termites are common pests that give homeowners problems too.  They typically burrow beneath the frost line in order to stay warm during the winter months.  However they would prefer to stay in your home if you will accommodate them.

You should frequently inspect your home to ensure you do not have any noticeable pest problems.  Check around cabinets and baseboards for any cracks or openingsthey can use to enter.  You especially do not need to leave food lying around since it will attract rodents and cockroaches.

Most importantly, you should look for holes on the exterior of your home.  Check the foundation for cracks as well as the basement or crawl space.  If you find any holes you should use caulk or concrete to fill them in.

Pests want to get out of cold, wet weather just as much as you do.  They will try their best to make their way inside your home.  Therefore you will need to do everything necessary to keep them out.  Enlist a professional pest control company to inspect your home periodically too.
