Dust Mies, Mold & Mildew: Destroying Your Health and Your Basement

Here is a thought that most home owners don't want to have: if your basement smells musty or shows signs of water or moisture, you're likely breathing in dust mite fecal matter and mold spores.

Disgusting, right?

Well, far too many home owners allow this to go on for years on end...then wonder why they have developed sinus allergies and other breathing problems!

Dust mites live in any basement where the humidity is about of over 50%. That may sound like a lot, but it's quite common. In fact, if you have that musty smell in your basement, you're humidity is that high.

The mites love this kind of environment and begin to eat and breed at a rapid pace. When this happens they also have more waste product. This gets on the surfaces of everything in the basement and is moved around in the air system in your home. You and your family breathe it in and it gets on the surfaces of the house...which we then touch with our hands. This is another way this waste product can enter our system.

These little pests are often accompanied by mold and mildew, which offer their own health problems.

Mold, especially highly toxic black mold, reproduces by means of air-borne spores. They also get into the air of the home plus onto the surfaces where we also breathe them in and ingest them. This all leads to things like sinus allergies, asthma, sinusitus, and other health problems.

To get rid of these problems you need to:

1. Put in good dehumidifiers. If you want to kill dust mites, reduce the humidity in the basement and they'll drop dead.

2. Get your basement waterproofed. Discover the origin of the problem and get it fixed. The longer water is allowed to penetrate the basement, the longer mold, mildew and dust mites will cause you health problems!
