I recently found myself driving through a relatively affluent part of the country. As I looked at some of the houses that lined the route, I realised that they were large and yet surprisingly unappealing. In effect, it was clear that they have been built to impress and that they were not having that impact on me.

Why should this be the case? To a degree,Expand Your Home In The Right Manner Articles it might be said that many of the homes appeared to lack character. Although this might be disappointing, it's not the only reason why I failed to be impressed. It was also clear the properties had been extended, without a great deal of thought being given to the process.

Often, parts of the individual properties simply didn't look right. The appearance would sometimes clash with other parts of the same building. When considering a selection of buildings, it became clear that they weren't sending out a consistent message. Were they, as we might suggest, examples of poor architecture in action?

I think that there is some truth in that statement, although I don't wish to be too critical of the original architects. Each of the properties may well have made sense, at the time of construction. But owners had clearly decided that they needed more space, or wished to make more of a display. In some cases, I would suspect that the properties had been added to by more than one owner.

That would certainly explain why there seemed to be such a lack of consistency. I've chosen to mention this view because I believe that it's a useful warning to all of us. When seeking to add more space to a home, it can be a little too easy to think about the impact on the interior of the house. This is only natural, since there may be dreams of adding a playroom, a home office, or space in which to entertain others.

It's important, however, that suitable consideration should also be given to external factors. What will others think, when they look at the additions that you have chosen to make to your home? There's clearly a danger that others may be left startled and somewhat horrified.

It can be reasoned, of course, that the formal planning process should ensure that the worst excesses of modern architecture are not allowed to take hold. Unfortunately, this is not always the case. As a home owner, it's important that you should look at your house with a sense of sympathy.

You may feel that it makes a lot of sense to extend your home and that it would be hard for others to disagree. Although this may certainly be true, it's also important that you should take the time to think carefully about your plans. Are you adding to the wider environment? Are you comfortable with the proposals that are in place?
