Exterior Painting and Your Home- Choosing the Right Colors

If you are not pleased with the exterior painting on your home, then the time may have come to make a change. But how do you decide what color would work best? That is not an easy question to answer as different color schemes can provide different impressions of your residence to those looking at it. An exterior paint job can do wonders for your home, whether you are planning to sell it or planning to live there for many years to come.

Paint color can have a greater impact on your house then you may realize. Just paint it a strange or very bold color and you will see the effect it has on everyone who sees it! The color of your exterior painting can make it look exciting, splashy, pleasing or depressing, boring or downright unappealing.

How do you know which color you should choose to paint the exterior of your dwelling? You have to consider the colors that are around your house that will remain the same, such as the trees, the roof, your neighbor's houses and the surrounding area. You want to select a color that will complement your home and everything around it but not clash with it. But you do not want to be boring or unoriginal. It can be a fine line you walk when it comes to making a decision about the color for your exterior painting. You might want to look for suggestions from other family members or friends before you hire a painting company.

Whatever color you select for your residence you should also choose another color that is complimentary to it for the trim on your home, as well as your shutters, your deck, porch and other elements of your home. When you go with only one color it can be a tad dull and very predictable. You may even decide to use two or three different shades of the same hue. Just make sure that you select colors that work well together and can live in harmony. Anything else would be disastrous looking for your home. Using neutrals that coordinate and balance each other out is always a smart way to go.

Do not be afraid to be a bit dramatic with your exterior painting choice but do not go overboard or too crazy. For instance a bright pink house may seem too wild but a house with a neutral color can scream unoriginal and lacking in passion. If you want to use a darker color for example then you can use it with a flair for the dramatic eye. If you like you can use a neutral color for the main color of your residence and then trim it in a darker color such as navy blue, brown, black or dark gray.

Darker colors can complement practically any color used for siding or trim. The important point is that you should show your own personality through the colors you choose. A green or blue house can look sensational when it is done in exactly the right way. One word of advice however is to not paint the outside of your home with a color that is gaudy or loud. This can affect your ability to sell your home in a negative manner.
