Make a note of which rooms receive the most foot traffic as you will need to find tile in these rooms that is durable. Along with the durability of the tile you will need to know what is involved when cleaning is necessary.

Examine all types of tile that you have available. Tile types will include porcelain, ceramic, stone and a peel and stick vinyl. You have the option for galaxy granite tiles, sparkly tiles and a basic floor tile. The next step in the process is to choose a color or pattern that matches the room.

Tiles come in various sizes and you need to choose the proper size for the room. The standard size for a floor tile is 12 inches by 12 inches. You can also use 8-inch by 8-inch and 10-inch by 10-inch sizes or a larger size of 14 inches by 14 inches.

Create a list of the materials and supplies that you will need to fit and install the tile. These will include a chalk line, tape measure, a trowel and glue or mortar.

Fitting the Tile

Measure the width and length of the room by using a tape measure. Multiply the width by the length to calculate the square footage of the space. Measure the width and length of the floor tiles and calculate the square footage. Divide the square footage of the room by the square footage of one tile to determine the number of tiles that you will need to complete the project.

Measure the center of each wall in the room and make a mark on the floor using a pencil. String a chalk line between each wall and snap two intersecting lines on the floor. Make sure that the intersecting lines are square.

Place a row of tile on the floor along both of the chalk lines on the floor. This is called dry fitting to see the tile layout. Make sure that you leave at least 1/8 of an inch along the edges of each wall to allow for expansion. You also want to verify the spacing between the tiles for the grout.

Tips

If a full size tile does not fit, it will need to be cut to the proper size by using a tile saw.
