Garage doors are available in a number of styles and paint jobs to match the decor of any home.
For some people it is a simply utilitarian entryway. In fact I think if you asked around you find that most people have never given much thought to the aesthetics of their garage doors. The truth is in the busy humdrum of daily life the only times that most of us are even really aware of them is when something goes wrong and they don’t open. Well that doesn’t need to be the case. Garage doors can be an attractive and uniquely personal aspect of every home.

One of the most popular styles today is called raised panels. They feature a number of rectangular panels. This is what is usually imagined when people think of garage doors. Occasionally they will include a serious of cut out sections along the top to create windows but often they are solidly built. This choice has the advantage of being easily painted to match the exterior paint of the home.

A similar style but sort-of a redesign of the raised panels is called contemporary panels. These feature many different sections as well but they are often custom designed to match the façade of the house. They are sometimes built of aluminum, steel or a variety of woods. These are often the most expensive choice because of their custom nature. However, because of the increasing popularity of this type of garage doors there are a number of companies now making prefabricated versions.

For many the most appealing choice of garage doors is what is called a carriage house style. These are fashioned to look similar to the gates of a carriage house and as such feature faux wooden gates and hinges. While pricey this option creates a very elegant look and is well suited to most classic homes.
While these three styles are the most common and popular among people they are by no means the only choice. Today there are manufacturers and craftsmen making these gates out of every material imaginable.

One popular material is bamboo because of its relatively inexpensive price and also its sustainability. Additionally this type of wood has a very distinct grain to it that is immediately recognizable. Some people are opting to have their entire piece made from frosted glass. Technology has created strong impact resistant glass that is also insulated so that it is not uncommon to see constructions using large glass sections.

Regardless of which style is chosen there is always the option of painting or staining your choice. It is relatively easy and any do-it-yourselfer is more than capable of doing it in an afternoon. No matter what choice there is no reason to neglect this area of the house any longer.
