Heating Your Home for the Winter

There is nothing worse than being cold in the winter. It's a miserable feeling and if you are sick or elderly it can be dangerous. The most common heating system is the furnace or boiler. A furnace heats the air before it pushes it out into your home. This can be accomplished by either electricity or gas warming the air. A boiler uses water to heat the room. It then provides steam or hot water to radiators that heat the room. These systems can last as long as 15 to 20 years. Older furnaces and boilers aren't as energy efficient as newer models meaning that you might be wasting energy and heat just to get your room as warm as you want it to be.

Another option in heating your home is wood. If you have a fireplace or wood stove then you can keep at least one room, or several rooms that are close together, warm by having a fire going. These too can be energy efficient which is good for you. That means you won't have to burn as much wood to get your home as warm as you want it to be. The only downfall is that it's not safe to burn a fire when you are not home. You will have to come home to a cooler home after you've been out but it won't take as long to warm up and it will keep the rest of your bills down.

If you aren't concerned about heating an entire home then you might consider a space heater. These little heaters can either be electric or gas powered and will provide the room that you are in with enough heat to keep you comfortable. These can be cost effective and energy efficient too. These will keep the electric or gas bills down, as they don't require as much electricity or gas to run. Like with the wood heaters, though, they should not be left running unsupervised.
