Selecting a right type of insurance policy for you is not an easy task and requires you to consider several factors. With a lot of companies providing you with similar insurance options, this task becomes all the more difficult.

However, it is important to note that you can't file a claim against any kind of damage to your property. However, there is no standard mantra or a set list for exclusions and these vary from one company to another.

These exclusions most commonly include damages caused to your property by your household pets, personal damages caused by leaving the house vacant or unlived for a long period of time, many environmental factors, and so on. Let's look at some of these factors in detail.

Damages arising as a result of environmental factors are an exclusion that may make it difficult for you to get a reasonably good deal on home insurance policy cover. Such factors usually include damages caused to property due to earthquakes, floods, hurricanes, or other such natural calamities. People living in environmentally risky areas such as low lying plains always facing the risk of floods may find it difficult to obtain an insurance cover altogether.

Also, if your house or the contents in it, such as the furniture, are too old life they may be included in the list of exclusions. You must also take into account that many insurance companies include damages done to the property by household pets as exclusions.

Similarly, damages caused to the house left vacant without a caretaker for a period of one month or more, are considered as exclusions. You are not entitled to file a claim for accidents occurring to such a property, as you haven't taken proper care of the same. However, this again varies from company to company. Whereas some companies give no leverage on the same, others may provide you with a maximum period of 2 months of home exclusion.

Also, most insurance companies treat an army evasion or attack as exclusion and do not let you claim any damages for same. However, damages caused by a car hitting your house are usually covered.

However, this list is not conclusive in nature and can include many more exclusions that are company specific. Mostly it depends on the climate, location, and the neighborhood where your house is located. Not only this, the list can also be updated from time to time.
