Something to Watch
It goes without saying that your system needs to have something with which to watch TV or movies. Yet, that is not as simple as it once was. Most systems will have a television of some sort, but some will use computer monitors while others will use projectors with a display screen. If you opt to go the “traditional” route and go with just a TV, you will still have lots of choices. Today you can opt for plasma, LCD, and even 3D televisions.

DVD/BluRay Disc Player
A DVD or BluRay disc player is essential to a good home theater installation. You need something to play movies, picture discs, and even video games. If you have an HD TV, the opt for a BluRay player or an HD DVD player to ensure the best picture quality. Otherwise, a standard DVD player is usually fine. Most modern systems do not have a VHS player, but if you have a large collection of VHS tapes, you may want to include one before they stop being made.

Speakers
Surround sound is fundamental to many systems, but not necessarily essential. You do, however, want to make sure that you have sufficient speakers for your system. Make sure that your speakers match the amount of space you have. Large speakers in a small room can overwhelm you with sound, while small speakers in a large space will fall short. Surround sound can be made to fit just about any space, so do not assume that you cannot have this feature if you do not have a large space.

Receiver
Your home theater installation will centralize on a receiver. This will connect all of the components and send messages back and forth to ensure you have a positive viewing experience. This is the place to spend extra money, if you have it, because it is fundamental to the viewing experience.

Gaming System
If you love video games, you will likely have a gaming system or two to work into the system. Your installer will know how to do this easily so you can seamlessly switch from television to video games. The more systems you have, the more difficult it may be, but you can usually integrate your video games into your system without too much difficulty.

Subwoofer
Subwoofers complete your surround sound by handling the bass sounds that regular speakers cannot tackle. This may not be essential, but it is a nice touch when you are setting up a first-rate system.

Remote Control
The remote control is the final piece to your home theater installation. Choose one that can operate most if not all of your devices. A good universal remote will prevents you from having problems when you misplace one of your five remotes. Your installer will be able to direct you to a good one for your system.
