Of course, as wonderful as it is to have a little library in the smallest room in the house, this is possibly the least use of shelves in the bathroom, with most people preferring to use them for storage of towels, bathroom products or a host of beauty products.

Whilst free standing units can be bought at reasonable prices these days, a far better and better functioning look can be readily achieved by installing them for yourself.

Before heading out and getting started however, it is important that you are comfortable you have the proper measurements in hand of course. Start by working out the length you need, and of course the width. This will be driven by both the space you have available, but also regards what you wish to store.

Most certainly the height between each shelf should be determined by what you intend to store on each one. As a rule, you should look to store your higher items on the uppermost shelf, (for the additional height it usually affords), however, it may be worth leaving an extra inch or two for changes you may want to do in the future, or any changing dimensions to other products housed there.

Once you have all these vitals, you can go and buy your materials. Some e4xcellent looks can be achie4ved with glass shelving of course; and these are easier to maintain though do show dust and grime more readily. Plastics too are good, along with some alloyed metals. If wood is your choice however, ensure it is stained or treated before finishing and try to avoid pressed woods which will retain moisture and warp over time.

Other than getting your measurement right; you should also spend a little time with the installation. Poorly installed units will not look great, and will inevitably fall in a clattering crash at some point in the future. Use wall studs to ensure a firm and steadfast attachment of the bracket.

The first shelf will be the trickiest, and here it is best to have a friend to help. Locate the first stud, and then attach the bracket to it. Next, attach the shelf and, using that extra pair of hands, use your level to get a nice plumb line. Attach the second stud and complete the attachment. Fit the other shelves in similar fashion, though this should now be easier having got your eye in.

For extra long shelves, or shelves that will be used for holding heavy items, an extra middle bracket may be required. But these too can be used to hang air fresheners, exfoliating sponges or other like items.

There are many other options the shelves can be used for too; to hold towels, (which make for particularly good units around the sink), or shampoos and shower gels are excellently housed in shower units.
