A list of common things thieves are looking for include:

  • Tools
  • Electronics
  • Jewelry
  • Money
  • Piggy Banks
  • Video Games and Gaming systems
  • Laptops
  • Wallet and/or purse

  • Medications
  • Firearms
  • Passwords that can lead to identity theft

Three very popular items for a burglar are firearms, passwords, and medications.  Firearms and medication both have a huge resale value.  Most burglars are working alone and are in need of money so they target items that can earn them money quickly.  They can easily find interested and willing buyers for firearms, medication and identity information.

Burglars aren't looking to make thousands of dollars at one house.  They are targeting $500-$1000 in cash or merchandise.  In most homes they can quickly and easily locate that.

Burglars are looking to get in and out quickly so they aren't caught.  Although they might not steal a large quantity of your personal items they will make a mess in the process and potentially destroy property.  They aren't looking to nicely open your medicine cabinet to find if you have anything they want to take.  Instead they will rip the door right off.

Tips to Prevent Your House from Being Targeted

In addition to thinking their house won't be a target because they don't have thousands of dollars inside, many feel their house is secure because they lock their front door or keep their important items in a lock box or firesafe.  Here are some things to keep in mind:

  • If you leave a ladder outside it can easily be used to access an upstairs open window.  Lock all windows and doors and don't leave a ladder or other furniture items outside that will make the second floor easily reached.
  • If you put your valuables in a lock box or firesafe the burglar will just take it with them and figure out how to open it later.  They won't need to rush to open it since they are no longer worried about being caught.
  • The first room a burglar heads to is the master bedroom.  Consider storing valuable items in the closet of the kids bedroom as the children's rooms are often left untouched by burglars.
  • Make your house unattractive to potential burglars by posting ADT signs and stickers.  They will fear being caught and will look to target a house  that is less risky.

The best method for preventing your house from being broken into is to make it less attractive to the burglars driving around looking for targets.  ADT signs and stickers are a fantastic deterrent.  Coupled with simple security measures such as putting away ladders and keeping windows and door locked, your house will be passed by for a more accessible option.  Contact us for more information about our home security products.
