This is hardly an impossible task. At the same time, though, there are bad companies out there. Companies that are sloppy with their moves, but continue to get business because their advertising is superior. Don't depend on advertising and bluster to make your decision. Use facts.

If you want recommendations, real estate agents are a good place to start. If you're already working with one to help sell your home, go to them first. Ask them if they can point you in the direction of competent, respected movers. These agents are more than just home sellers. Their entire livelihood depends on knowing the ins and outs of the industry. If you ever want a line on a good contractor, an excellent electrician, or a moving company that won't let you down, they are one of the best repositories of information you can find.

Longevity
The length of time a company has been in business is an important factor when you choose the people you want to hire. Why is that? There's nothing saying that a newer startup can't provide service that is just as good as a veteran company, but you'll have little information to go on. A veteran company will have a lot of information out there. People will have used the movers for years. There will be recommendations and reviews you can peruse. Simply staying in business for more than a decade takes a certain level of customer satisfaction.

Price
Price is a tricky concept when it comes to hiring movers. While you don't necessarily need to hire the most expensive company in town, you probably don't want to jump at the chance to hire the cheapest, either. Good companies charge their rates for a reason. Will there be companies out there charging higher rates simply because they can? Yes. There will also be companies charging ridiculous amounts because of inflated salaries and overhead. But the more expensive companies often offer a better level of service as well. By the same token, those companies offering bargain basement rates may cost you twice as much in damaged items and frustration. There's nothing wrong with looking for a deal, but don't hang your hat on it.
