It can turn out to be a huge mistake to neglect taking pest control measures around your home.  Doing even the smallest things on a regular basis will go a long way toward keeping pests from setting up shop in and around your home.  Here are a few simple pest control tips for the average homeowner.

Food
Pests are attracted to all types of food that you leave lying around your home.  This ranges from dirty dishes in the sink to crumbs left behind between the sofa cushions.  As far as dirty dishes go, you will want to avoid leaving them in the sink overnight.  At least put them in the dishwasher.

Those who have pets will also attract problems if they are not careful.  Never leave your pet's food out overnight in the bowl either, because rodents and other pests may get to it before they do.

Water
Never let moisture problems go unresolved around your home.  If you notice the sink in your bathroom is leaky, get it fixed.  It may not take more than 15 minutes to do so if you know what you are doing.  Pests will be attracted to standing water, so that little time investment could save you quite a headache.  Leaky sinks in the kitchen are particularly problematic since this area provides both water and food.

Yard
Some people just hate keeping their yards tidy.  If you let it get too cluttered though, pests will set up homes out there.  Keep your grass cut to a reasonable level since insects love tall grass.  Weeds growing around your home should also be treated with weed killer.  Fallen leaves, dead branches, and other debris should also be disposed of immediately.

Gutters
Hopefully, you are aware of the important job that gutters do around your home.  Basically, they help protect your home from top to bottom.  A damaged or malfunctioning gutter system can cause problems with your roof, interior walls, and foundation.

If water is allowed to collect in your gutter, then it will help attract pests to the area.  You definitely will not want mosquitoes breeding like crazy so close to your home.  Keep a check on your gutters especially during the fall when the leaves and branches start falling.
