Asphalt shingles: These are the most common type found all over North America. They are made of roofing felt, saturated with asphalt and mineral granules. Asphalt shingles have a wide range of colors and styles, and you can do your own basic repairs on them.

Wood shingles: These are mostly long-lasting, and are great if you want a traditional, rustic look to your home. They are generally made of cedar. However, wood shingles require a lot of upkeep, which tends to become expensive for the homeowner.

Slate shingles: These are made from blocks of slate, which are then broken down into individuals shingles. Clay tile: These are basically durable, fireproof and insect-proof. However, they only look right with a certain kind of architecture, so you need to first evaluate your structure before installing.

Built-up roofs: These are created only on flat or nearly flat roofs. Roofing felt is made in layers, and hot tar is used to build the surface. The final layer is covered with gravel to give protection. Many commercial complexes use this kind of covering for their buildings.

Roll roofing: This type is quick to install, it is inexpensive, but has a very short life span. It is useful exclusively to flat roofs. It should be used as temporary solution by the homeowner, till he goes in for sturdier material.
