Squirrels will try to get in your garbage can to find meals too.  You need to ensure the lid is always on tight.  If you use a plastic trashcan, then pests may chew right through it to gain entry.  Using a metal can is a much better idea.

There should not be any opening on the exterior of your home they can use for access.  If you find any openings, they should be sealed as soon as possible.

You should also know squirrels can enter your home through your chimney if you do not have it sealed.  You can prevent this by installing a chimney cap to keep them out.

Some homeowners resort to using repellents to try to keep squirrels at bay.  Mothballs are the most common type of repellent used.  Fox urine is another repellent you can try.  Repellents should be combined with other preventative measures since they are rarely very effective when used on their own.

Do not let squirrels cause problems around your home.  Do not leave any food outside which will attract them.  Also, ensure there are no openings they can use to gain access to your attic.
