Storage Services: Deciding What to Store

You may not realize that you need storage services, but just about everyone can use a little extra space. Most homes are crowded with items that are rarely needed, that hold sentimental value, and those that are being saved for just the right occasion. Choosing to remove some of these items from your home can give you a clean slate and a little more breathing room than you might expect.

Personal Items and Memorabilia

Whether it be that old high school yearbook or the newspaper from the last Presidential election, everyone keeps things that they believe are meaningful in some way shape or form. Some items hold sentimental value like a grandmother's wedding gown or her old sewing machine that she used all the time. These aren't things that you are going to use each day, but they aren't things that you want to just throw away either. Storage services give you the chance to hang on to these items without taking up so much of the living space in your home.

Package them neatly and be sure to label each box with enough information to let you know what it inside. Try to group like items together. For example, if you have a letterman's jacket, a yearbook, and a scrapbook from high school you probably want to keep them all together. Also anything else from that time period of your life should go in as well.

Files and Paperwork

People accumulate paperwork as their lives progress. There are papers for the home loan, neighborhood association documents, copies of old bills and maybe even some canceled checks. When shopping for storage services, look for a place that would be able to keep these documents away from water and other elements to make sure that they will be safe. You probably don't want to place birth certificates, marriage licenses and social security cards here; they would be better off at a security deposit box at the local bank for more convenient access.

If you own your own business paperwork can begin to accumulate pretty quickly as well. Because of the tax laws, some documents need to be saved for several years. Instead of crowding up all of your work space, you can rent out space and every month make a trip to deposit the latest papers that you don't need to have with you all the time.

Extra Furniture

When you look around your home are their pieces of furniture that just don't fit? Maybe they will fit after you complete a remodel. Maybe they are going to another family member but no one can't take them for a while. Storage services are prefect for furniture. These items take up a lot of room and when they are removed, the whole house can look completely different. Be sure to wrap the furniture up in some way that will prevent dust from getting into the materials. You may want to stack pieces on top of each other to create enough room for everything to fit in a smaller unit. Storage services are a great way for you to keep possession of the things that you want without having to keep them in your home.
