In Italy few houses still have a dining room. Those who are lucky enough to have one, though, should know how to enhance this room.

A consequence of this is that some rooms, which were part of the houses of the past, are now disappearing. This is the case, for example, of the cellar, of the study, of the third bedroom and, above all, of the dining room. But the dining room can be a very important room of the house, and if you furnish it with beautiful furniture and original accessories, it can become the centre of your house.

The dining room (which in Italian is called lunch room) was an important room in the past because lunch was a ritual nobody escaped, and the whole family used to gather for lunch: the mother, who perhaps had cooked the whole morning, the dad, who came back from work to have launch, and the children coming back from school. Nowadays there are many people who do not come back home for the lunch break and prefer to eat something fast near where they work or in the work canteen. Also for this reason the dining room has lost its importance, and since many families need to reduce the spaces where they live, they very often decide to eliminate this room, or to englobe it with the kitchen or the living room. However, in spacious houses and flats, the dining room can be very useful, and although people are not used anymore to have lunch all together, the dining room can be the ideal room to organize dinners and parties, or to welcome guests. In any case, when you design a living room you need to take some factors into consideration.

First of all, the dining room should be next to the kitchen or connected to it through a hatch. Another factor you need to consider, if you want to have your house designed with a dining room, is the size of the room: it should be about 12-16 m², to make at least 6 people move in the room. After that, you need to think about furniture: it is self-evident that the main features of a dining room are the table and chairs. As for chairs, some people choose chairs with the same style of the table, but this is not a necessary choice to be made: first of all, chairs should be comfortable, perhaps with padded backs and arm-rests, to help the unifying role of the dining room. To make the room more original you can choose colorful chairs, for example, which are very fashionable these days, also because they contrast with the minimal style and the predominance of white of many modern houses. As for the choice of the table, you can choose among many different styles and materials. Keep in mind that the table is to be put in the middle of the room, and that a round table is particularly fit for reduced spaces, as well as an extendable table, which can be shortened or lengthen if there is the need.

To give your dining room the last touch, you can indulge yourselves with original tablecloths, dishware and cutlery or with other accessories, to make the room as welcoming as possible.
