Often, there is a lot of junk that you keep in your garage or shed.  Roaches love hiding away in these places since humans do not disturb them all that often.  A messy area like that is particularly good, so you will want to keep everything stored away neatly.

The same thing holds true for your basement.  Do not just stack a lot of cardboard boxes down there.  Unless you plan on saving some of that stuff to sell as antiques later, just get rid of it.  Not only is it taking up space, but it may also be providing space for roaches.

You should never, ever leave any type of food lying around your home.  Roaches will consume even the smallest crumb they stumble upon.  Make sure all leftovers are properly disposed of in the garbage after you have finished eating meals.  Wash the dishes within a matter of hours, or keep them sealed in your dishwasher so roaches will not be attracted to the leftover crumbs.

Since you will most likely have plenty of old food items tossed in your garbage can, it is important to keep roaches out of there too.  Choose a design that has a lid and ensure it fits tightly.

Do not let food or other debris lie around on the floors in your home either.  Mop and sweep the kitchen every day if you have the time.  Vacuum your carpets at least every couple of days too.

Roaches can enter your home through cracks in the foundation or other exterior areas of your home.  You will need to keep all cracks and crevices sealed with something like caulk.  Cracks in the walls inside your home can also be a problem because of roaches that have already gained entry somehow.  They love resting in these small spots, so repair them to take the opportunity away from them.

You may not be able to keep roaches out of your home entirely.  If you do happen to see a few running around, you may be able to get rid of them easily though.  Consider setting up bait stations around your home.  For homeowners who want something that works a lot faster, there are sprays which will kill them instantly upon contact.
