Travertine might elicit some confusion. Travertine,Travertine Tile Has Different Finishes for Different Uses Articles like marble, is a form of limestone. It is quarried from springs and riverbanks. Like marble, it is a patterned stone. The patterns are caused in the same way, by mineral deposits. As a building material, travertine tile is used as flooring and for covering walls. It is used commercially and in residences. There are several advantages to using travertine tile.

The rich, subtle tones vary from tile to tile because of the mineral deposits. The earthy colors range from ivory to chocolate brown. A variety of finishes makes this stone very versatile. Variation, earth tones and choices of finishes make this tile interesting to work with.

Travertine is a porous stone and as such easily stains. It should not be used in its natural state where it will be exposed to water and spills. There are finishes that protect the stone and make it more suitable for kitchens and baths. Honed and filled tiles have the holes filled for a smoother finish. A portion of the surface is then removed to make the tile smoother and shinier. It is now less porous and can be used for kitchen and bathroom floors. It is also suitable where a modern, sleek appearance is desired.

Unfilled and tumbled is a finish for a rustic, natural look. The stone is tumbled with sand or gravel to give it an aged look. Surface is pitted and rough; it reflects very little light. A chiseled finish has a similar application. With this finish, the edges of the tile are chipped for a rustic, distressed look.

A brushed finish adds texture to stone that has already been cut flat. Wire brushes are used that create textured patterns in the tile.

Polished tiles are glossy. They are also suitable for kitchens and baths. They are better able to resist damage from spills because the porous surface is sealed. Whether the home is modern or rustic there is a travertine tile to fit the special look and feel.
