If you have looked at your energy bill with a sinking feeling, you might think it is time to start looking into alternative energy for home. In the not so distant past, the desire to use alternative energy forms might have been restricted to those best described as hippies by the mainstream media and the majority of people. But, as the prices for certain types of energy as well as the tons and tons of information about the dangers of this energy continue to increase, more and more people are willing to at least consider the alternatives.

The most common of the alternative fuels is solar energy. There are a vast number of people who harness the power of the sun, if only for very small uses in and around their home. Look at the little walkway lights that people have in front of their house. The bulk of those are solar powered. Many people use solar blankets on their swimming pool, capturing the heat of the sun to warm their pool’s water to a more comfortable temperature without having to use any additional power source. Some people go a step further, using the power of the sun to run their entire household. The basic premise is simple: the sun’s power is captured by specialized solar panels and the energy is stored for later use, such as when the sun goes down or when it is a cloudy day.

Wind energy is gaining popularity as more people learn about it. There are drawbacks to it, of course, but it is a viable alternative energy resource to be considered just the same. Wind power tends to be most active at night, which means that it can be used effectively in tandem with solar energy. But, even at night, you can’t always predict or count on the wind blowing and the turbines that are used in wind energy can be very loud. Birds are often killed by the turbines, which can cause some problems as well.

There are other alternative energy sources as well, including those that have been in use for centuries. Water can be used to power machinery or other items that need power, but there has to be a nearby water source and the problem can be noise and other issues. Almost every energy resource has some drawback or negative, so it is often a matter of trading off from one to another, when you are looking to minimize the costs and the impact to the environment. Making sure you learn about alternative energy for home is the first step to taking control and gaining power over the power that you use.
