When to Call a Roofing Company

Adequate shelter is one of the basic things that human beings need for survival and part of that shelter is a roof. Properly maintaining the roof of your home will ensure that you and your loved ones are protected from the elements. As with all things, a roof is susceptible to damage. Check your roof regularly and if you notice any particular problems, it is time to call a roofing company.

Exterior Signs

Grab a flashlight and a stick and inspect the exterior of the roof of your house. As you walk along the roof, if you notice any missing, warped, curled, buckling or rotting shingles, it is time to call a roofing company. Try to push the stick through any spots on the roof to determine the extent of any rotting. If the shingles are all intact, but you see algae growth, you should also consider calling a professional, as the algae can eventually eat through the shingles and cause damage to the roof. Have a look at the flashing, as well; if it is dented, cracking or settling, you should seek the help of a professional company.

Interior Signs

The exterior portion of your roof isn't all that you should inspect when assessing the health of your roof; you also need to check the interior of the roof, or the ceiling below the roofline. Grab your flashlight and a stick and get into the attic to assess your roof from the inside. Have a look around the interior of the roof. If you see any sagging between the rafters, the roof is likely in poor health and will need to be repaired. Check to see if you notice any dark spots. Dark spots are usually an indication of leaking and a sign that the roof will need to be repaired. Feel the dark spots to determine if they are wet and gently push the stick through any dark spots to see how much any leaks have damaged the roof. If you can see any outside light coming in through the roof, then a call to roofing company is an absolute must.

The experts will assess the extent of the damage and discuss your options with you. In some cases, you may be able to repair only the damaged portions, but if there is ample damage, a new roof may be necessary and in the end, will cost less than the price of leaving the problem unresolved.
