If you try to cram as much information and as many links into your navigation bar, you run the risk of frustrating the customer. Remember, your goal is to make the customer's experience as hassle free as possible. Using Flash technology to create animated navigation bars may seem like a neat way to show off and display extra links in drop down panels, but many times, these methods only lead to the customer clicking away as the drop boxes disappear and reappear. This does not make for a good customer experience, and could cause a customer to seek business elsewhere.
Furthermore, you are wanting to reduce the number of clicks a site visitor needs to make in order to get to what they are looking for. Keeping your site's design clean and minimal is going to be the safest bet, including only essential links to products and information. Useless ads and columns only create more clutter and only serve to squeeze your design into a tighter space.
