A criminal lawyer must have a special selection of skills. Here are some things to think about.

A criminal lawyer is different than an average legal representative. This form of law takes an aggressive and astute individual, much more so than a tax attorney or one that files bankruptcies. This realm of legal maneuvering has lots more to do with the complex intricacies regarding people rather than paperwork although both are required. Some famous criminal lawyers that have made the headlines or been the stars of television shows include Johnny Cochran, Alan Dershowitz, F. Lee Bailey, Anne Bremner, Perry Mason and Denny Crane.

- Johnny Cochran: Johnny Cochran made the news so often during the O.J. Simpson trial that he has become iconic in terms of name recognition. His famous line “If the gloves don’t fit then you must acquit” is still quoted today as a memorable splash of verbiage. And that’s exactly what the jury ended up doing -- acquitting a famous celebrity who had lots of evidence stacked against him. Cochran was able to create “reasonable doubt” in the minds of jurors which ended up winning the famous case. He also represented rappers such as Snoop Dog, Tupac Shukar and musician Michael Jackson. Mr. Cochran died in 2005.

- Alan Dershowitz: Dershowitz has defended famous clients in high profile cases such as Mike Tyson, Claus von Bulow, Patty Hearst, Kirtanananda Swami and Michael Milken. He also played a part in the O.J. Simpson trial. He is so skilled that out of fifteen murder cases, he has won thirteen of them. Mr. Dershowitz is a brilliant Harvard professor who has authored several books.

- F. Lee Bailey: F. Lee Bailey was born in Massachusetts and attended Harvard for a short time. He dropped out of Harvard and joined the Marines in the 1950’s. After serving in the U.S. Marines, he returned to Boston University where he graduated top of his 1960 class. Mr. Bailey represented many famous clients, winning some cases and losing others. He was eventually disbarred from practicing law in several states because of some misconduct putting clients’ funds into his own bank accounts.

- Anne Bremner: Anne Bremner is a slender and attractive blond attorney who looks more like a fashion model than a legal eagle. She became famous when she represented Michael Jackson in a case regarding child molestation. She resides in Seattle, Washington and made the headlines again recently when she was arrested herself for driving under the influence of alcohol.

- Perry Mason: Perry Mason is a fictional character from 1960’s television shows. This popular TV show was modeled after a book written by Erle Stanley Gardner. Raymond Burr played the starring role as the gentile yet highly competent lawyer who always got his guy.

- Denny Crane: Another iconic fictional attorney is Denny Crane from the modern day television series, Boston Legal. William Shatner played the part of this pro who also prevailed in the courtroom on a regular basis.
To be a criminal lawyer, a person must be savvy to the nth degree. Top notch brains as well as people skills are required.
