The Share This tag gives social media users the chance to spread a message they like from the web across their social circle.  The opportunity for companies to interact with these influencers is too exciting to ignore.  A power user in social media can boost viral marketing effects,Twitter Markes Its Mark Articles change consumer opinion, and grow a company’s business revenue and bottom line.

One network that has gained a lot of attention is Twitter, a micro blogging service that has burst unto the scene using Tweets, or short 140 character messages, to share information on the web with an established community of “followers” but also with the public at large.  Twitter has shown up on the morning news, sports shows, and entertainment programs, simply because it is easy to sign up and start following the day to day activities of Twitter users, sometimes referred to as Tweeps.  Whether Twitter continues its rapid growth or not, micro blogging will be available in one form or another.  It might continue under a different brand, similar to how Facebook has eclipsed Myspace, or in combination with another tool, as users push for a universal network.

Twitter has a couple of simple applications that are useful for Tweeps or for cutting edge businesses seeking another Social Media success story.  In keeping with the social media theme of interactive communication, rather than broadcast communication, Twitter users can do more than simply publish and promote themselves or their business offerings.

Twitter does offer the basic opportunity to get the message to the masses, using a popular and exciting new technology; the most non-technological services can be featured on a cutting edge platform.  Of course, while some users have adopted Tweets without changing their strategy, as evidenced by the constant barrage of “visit my website and get a free gift”, the more prevalent activity is the exchange of ideas.   Industry experts can quickly establish a web presence to receive questions and offer advice.  Customers and their advocates can learn about a variety of topics from the best minds in an industry.  Similar to a one-room schoolhouse, instruction comes at a very direct level.

Finally, the technology involved with Twitter allows for easy searches of web conversations.  Using the # or hash tag within a tweet creates a flag so that users can pull up relevant messages on a subject, event, or debate.  For marketers searching on the Hash tag allows them to monitor the products or services they offer and understand the market and the consumer attitude based on tweet threads.  If a certain offer or headline is generating a lot of buzz, marketers can tailor a similar effort for their campaign.  The hash tag is also used around events or even webinars to create a backchannel conversation between Twitter users.  These hash tags can alert people attending a show about a venue change or let groups coordinate quickly for an impromptu meeting.

The evolution of Twitter from a social exchange to a business tool has been rapid and coincides with the openness of companies and consumers to share what they really want, where they can get it, and their level of satisfaction after a purchase.  The user generated content that comes from Twitter, and the speed that it’s made available, makes the micro blogging world one worthy of consideration.   With the continued push to open and honest communication on the web, Twitter has proven to be a captivating arena for discussion and business.
