Why Are You Doing This?

By Jeff Neil

Sometimes it amazes me how so much in everyday life relates
to having a home based business. For instance,Why Are You Doing This? Articles the other
night I went grocery shopping with my wife and five year old
great niece.

Nothing special about it. Just your average fun filled, full
of excitement, Thursday night on the town.

You know how five year olds are. Always wanting to help and
taking pride in what they accomplish. Crystal is no
exception, except she can barely reach over the cart.

But that doesn`t matter. She does her best at putting the
groceries in the cart and stacking them nice and neat. It
does add fifteen minutes or so to this exciting event. But
it`s time well invested.

So as we went through our routine she stacked some cans of
(tuna?) and asked me if she was doing a good job.

"Yes" I said. "You`re doing a great job...you`re hired.".
Crystal looked at me with a puzzled expression and asked
"what`s that mean?".

Some people in the isle started laughing. "Don`t ask, you
will find out soon enough." one guy said. While a woman
there said to Crystal that she didn`t want to know about
being hired.

I kind of chuckled myself. But not for the same reason. Now
I wasn`t laughing at these people. They were just being
friendly. But there is something they don`t know.

Crystal does not *have* to get a job. And neither do your
kids. Crystal, along with the rest of the crew that thinks I
owe them something, is getting a chance you and I didn`t
have.

She is being brought up to know that you don`t have to work
hard all your life. That you can have your own successful
business. You can accomplish and have the things you want in
life.

Most of us weren`t really taught that. Even if we were told
that.

Do you remember how it was when you were growing up? If
your childhood was like mine, you were told to go to school
and study. To get good grades. To go to college if we could
afford to and to do all that so we could get a good job.

Times are slowly changing. Home based businesses are being
started every day. But with that work at home attitude comes
a reason. A reason why someone would choose to do this.

When I talk to a prospect on the phone I try to find out why
they want their own home based business. And usually the
answer is money.

But money is not a good enough answer. Sure, we all want
more of it. But money alone is a poor motivator.

Why do you want more money? If you had more money what would
you do with it? How would it improve your lifestyle?

Ask yourself why you want your own home based business. Why
are you doing this? We all have our reasons. Many of them
are different. Yet many are also very similar.

Maybe it`s the freedom. The opportunity to travel. To just
be your own boss. Or maybe you don`t really know.

If you don`t really know, or just need another reason to
keep you going, try this. As you sit at your desk staring
into your monitor, take a look at that child beside you.
That precious child staring at you, as intensely as you stare
at your computer.

And then ask yourself again, "Why are you doing this?"
