The price of gold has more than trebled since 2004 and the price of gemstones has also increased over the same time period.

As you know women are fond about jewellery. An increasing number of women are buying designer jewellery for themselves, according to a survey. Research by International Jewellery London revealed it is likely that more women will continue to buy their own designer jewellery as they are tired of waiting for a loved one to purchase a ring or necklace for them instead.

The survey found that women are not afraid to splash out as 58 per cent buy jewellery for themselves, worth up to £100;, at least every six months, while 22 per cent spend between £100 and £500 on a single piece.

Almost 50 per cent of women either see buying designer jewellery as a 'gift to themselves', or a dedicated purchase to match a specific outfit or for a special occasion.

Hardly any women buy rings, necklaces or bracelets for long-term profit as only one per cent said that they bought their last piece of designer jewellery for themselves as an investment.

The investigation also discovered that ethical issues surrounding the production and manufacture of jewellery have a large impact on what ornaments and charms people purchase.

Three-quarters of women said that they would be willing to pay more for jewellery which had been ethically sourced as opposed to so-called blood diamonds, which come from war-torn countries and are synonymous with worker exploitation.

For 78 per cent of women the design of jewellery is of paramount importance as up to 65 per cent of females are prepared to spend time online researching a potential jewellery purchase before visiting a store.

International Jewellery London is positive about the designer jewellery market and is expecting more people to invest in charms and trinkets despite the current economic climate.
