The Affordable Option of Used Portable Band Sawmills

Good news:  thanks to the availability of used portable band sawmills,The Affordable Option of Used Portable Band Sawmills Articles owning your own saw mill no longer has to be a budget buster.  Let's take a look at the very real possibility of you owning your own portable sawmill.

As the name suggests, bandsaw mills are tools that combine the properties of a bandsaw and a sawmill. Using a saw that has a continuous steel belt with a serrated edge, a bandsaw mill enables the operator to transform logs of varying sizes into lumber that can be used for a variety of projects or for resale. The different features available make it possible for operators to produce smooth, usable planks of their desired thickness, even while compensating for taper in the original logs. Operators can also use certain bandsaw mills to saw unsquared planks, even in such woods as birch.

Both hydraulic and portable bandsaw mills are widely available in today’s market. The type of bandsaw mill used is frequently determined by the amount of use the machine will see per day, week, etc.; log size; location where the sawing will take place; and other factors.

Bandsaw mills are available on the market in a wide variety of types and sizes. In addition to variations on the diameter of the logs a machine will accept, there are also variations on log length. Operators can choose from an array of options available on different models. These include log loaders, squaring pins, power head lift and more.

Adjustable speeds, power feeds and forward and reverse options are available to increase the speed and ease of use, making it possible for operators to increase the efficiency of their work.

Certain bandsaw mill models require the operator to walk with the controls as the log is being cut, while other models feature a stationary operator’s area where the operator can stand while the saw travels the length of the log. Operators can also choose from models that require a manual reset of the log after each cut, or models that have an automatic log rotation built in. By choosing a model that automatically rotates and resets the log, the operator can save a significant amount of time, as they do not have to stop in between each cut to reposition the log. Even a manual bandsaw mill with a 10HP electric motor, however, is estimated to saw roughly 300 board feet per hour with two men.

Some hydraulic models available on today’s market have engines that crank out more than 20 HP. Portable models typically feature smaller motors. As their name implies, the portable models are generally smaller, making them easier to transport to and from the job location. Some portable models are small enough to fit in a standard-size pickup truck bed, while others are transported on towable trailers. Portable models can weigh less than 500 pounds, and some can be pulled using only an ATV, making it possible to transport the unit to deep woods locations with limited access.

So far, so good.  But what about the cost?  Sawmills can run you several thousand dollars if bought new.  But that's the point:  The smart minds today are buying used portable band sawmills.  This normally cuts down your investment to just a small fraction of the cost of the same sawmill new.  Just be careful that you examine everything, especially the equipment, closely.  And make sure of the availability of good repair parts in case anything breaks right away.

Sawmills are fulfilling and can even bring in some money.  And thankfully, you don't have to go broke if you do your shopping from the various used portable band sawmills.
