Gemstone cabochons are stones that have a convex shape at the top and a flat bottom. These stones are not faceted but are highly polished. As precious and semi-precious stones have become expensive,Expert Tips and Features to Check While Looking For the Right Gemstone Cabochons Articles Cabochons are a good alternative. Cabochons gemstone looks equally dazzling and attractive and is not very expensive compared to precious stones.
As theses stones are highly polished their luster is impressive but they lack clarity. These types of gemstones are available in a variety of patterns, color and sizes. They are easily available in local stores or can be purchased online. However, with so much variety it becomes difficult to differentiate between genuine cabochons and fake stones. Gemstone Cabochons are made with special technology; they can be easily differentiated with the make and quality of the stone.
Cabochons are cut carefully to obtain the distinct character. Faceting is usually done in case of translucent gemstones and gemstone cabochons are made out of opaque stones. Translucent gemstones that weigh seven or less in hardness on the Mohs hardness scale are also made into cabochons to prevent them from developing any scratches and loose its luster.
To check if the gemstone cabochons are right, check the shape of the cabochons. Begin by asking about the make to the jeweler, whether it is natural, synthetic or imitation. A good jeweler will disclose correct information. Check if the gemstone cabochons have an authenticity certificate. Only the opaque stones are polished for cabochons and hence should not ideally reflect light, as cabochons are not faceted. Hence, they should appear less transparent than the original ones.
If the stone is placed on a surface, pick it up and examine it from all sides. If the quality of the cabochons gemstone were good, the luster of the stone would be even on the top side. Usually cabochons are unpolished and flat at the backside. Keep the stone on a flat surface and check if it is perfectly flat. Look for jagged colors. This will aid in knowing if the stone has been treated with a dye or low quality paints. Dyes and paints will usually leave an uneven blot or toothed structure in the stone. Usually there would be some kind of pattern in the stone unlike precious stone which are known for their clarity and neatness.
The designs and patterns of the gemstones usually appear at the bottom of the surface. Look, them up against bright light they will be easily visible. Example a tiger’s eyes marking will be easily seen in a bright light. A good quality gemstone cabochons when held against light, appears opalescent. The reflection of the light should seem three-dimensional. To select perfect gemstone cabochons, it is important to know how cabochons are made and to read and understand about the features that make up for good quality cabochons.
