A popular saying goes,Homebuilders see demand for bigger houses Articles “No place like home,” and it rings truer than ever. A home is where you look forward to after spending some time working, visiting, or going on a long trip.

Homes also come in different sizes, designs, and structures. Your model is dependent on certain fundamentals such as your budget, taste, environment, and governmental policy on housing in your demography.

In recent times, there has been a paradigm shift in demand for bigger houses. Data from the U.S Census Bureau indicates that the average size of a new single-family peaked at 2,689 square feet about five years ago. This data proves that people are now abandoning traditional new single-family houses for something bigger because they need more space.

Recent Survey

A recent survey taken across different real estate sectors in the U.S indicates that Home builders are getting more demand from consumers for bigger houses. There is also a forecast that reveals that the average home will experience a surge in consumer demand in the second half of the year.

Factors contributing to demand for larger homes

  • Work

No doubt, the year 2020 will go down as one of the most memorable ones in history. It was the year the unexpected happened in the global economy as the world economy tumbled negatively. Both advanced and emerging economies were not spared from the negative impact of covid-19 as government and businesses had to resort to shutting down economies and operations to curtail the spread of the virus.

During this period, a new trend emerged, although it has always been in existence. However, this work-from-home trend became the new normal as everyone had to adjust to remote life. This factor contributed immensely to the demand for larger housing because to work continuously from home, you will need a dedicated space for work, much like a home office.

  • School

The pandemic forced the government and policymakers to shut down schools in their regions. However, schooling continued because schools adopted a “school from home” policy. Most parents saw the need to move to a larger house because they needed the extra space to attend to the academic needs of the wards.

  • Exercise

Sporting facilities were shut down during the peak of the Covid-19 pandemic, creating a need for most sports lovers to have a training center for themselves at their homes.

Do larger homes impact the environment?

Most environmental conservationists believe that returning to a larger home system is not good due to its negative impact on the environment. They argue that the larger the house, the higher the rate of carbon emission that will be released into the atmosphere. Larger homes will also lead to an increase in energy consumption needed to heat the house.

The desire to reduce global warming is another reason most conservationists advocate for a reduction in greenhouse emissions. They believe that to make significant progress in reducing climate change impact on the larger environment is to focus on reducing large house construction.

Conclusion

Bigger houses are great because they give individuals the opportunity to do different things in the home. As we find ourselves staying indoors more, homebuilders have seen the need to make houses spacious enough to accommodate various users. However, it is also essential that consideration should be given to their impact on the environment.
