When someone as well known as Kaenon Polarized says that they have developed a radically new lens material, I become extremely curious. So I checked further on their site. It seems the new material is called SR-91, and it is "the foundation for the finest polarized lenses in the world." It is not glass nor polycarbonate, but a totally new lens material. It combines "the crisp optical acuity of the finest glass lenses, in an ultra light weight, impact-proof lens ... that has certified Kaenon Polarized SR-91 lenses with an optical acuity and clarity rating of "40" - the highest possible score in the stringent ANSI Z.87.1 testing regimen."

Not knowing a lot about polarization, I checked into that as well. In the Random House Collage Dictionary, polarization is described as "optic, a state, or the production of a state, in which rays of light or similar radiation exhibit different properties in different directions." What?

A website I found describes it like this, "Light reflected from surfaces like a flat road or smooth water is generally horizontally polarized. This horizontally polarized light is blocked by the vertically oriented polarizers in the lenses."

Okay, so I guess I really don't need to know how it happens, I just know that light glare is always annoying and can be dangerous. Therefore, it seems to me that Kaenon polarized sunglasses would alleviate the whole glare problem.

However, some people say that although polarized lenses reduce the glare, they may not provide enough contrast for items like ice patches or moguls in downhill skiing. There are also those that say polarized lenses may not allow you to see certain LCD (liquid crystal) displays. When using polarized lenses from a certain angle, LCDs cannot be seen.
