Typically, it is made of leather. Today it is common for men to wear a belt with their trousers; women tend to wear them for more decorative functions. Good quality leather is very expensive and hence genuine leather belts can range anywhere between $70 to $500, depending on their different quality leather, designs, adornments on them, craftsmanship used et al.
There are a number of varieties of leather that is used to make these belts.

Leather is cured from the skins of a variety of animals, including alligator, ostrich, lizard, stingray, shark and buffalo, deer, elk and rabbit, and then they are processed to make numerous varieties and styles of leather belts. So you get an array of designs and patters of leather belts to choose from in the market. An out-of-style belt will always make even the most fashionable ensemble look dated.

A few different categories are-

Basic Leather- Basic single-strap leather belts come in a variety of sizes and colors. They are often dyed to obtain a wider range of colors, from neutrals such as black to more exotic hues such as red or teal.

Decorated- Leather belts with cutout or painted designs, rhinestones, and a variety of other decorative items fitted or engraved into them. The designs can range from anything like a simple painted stripe to attached feathers, metal items, beads, and glass pieces, shells to an intricately studded design.
Braided- The best-braided belts are typically made from a single piece of leather for durability. In a braided leather belt, the leather is cut into strips and braided along the belt length. Braids can be simple, with two or three strips of leather, or more complex, with as many as seven or more braided strips. Standard buckles are attached to a section of the leather that has been left uncut to provide a closure.

Leather is pliable and durable which make it ideal for belt manufacturing. Leather items can have molds and mildew if left unused for a long time. The maintenance for any leather material is as simple like using them everyday or keeping them in a moisture-free place. There are also oils, balms and conditioner that can be purchased to preserve it.
