Today Medical Scrubs are worn throughout the world by doctors,The Historical Perspective of Scrubs Articles nurses, surgeons, dentists and administrative staff in the hospitals. The doctors’ day simply does not begin without scrubs. However, the era when scrubs came into existence is still unknown. We still don’t remember the time when these comfortable and practical scrubs were not a standard for daily wear in the medical profession. In this article, we shall discuss how medical scrubs evolved from ancient times through today.

Initially, there was no concept of scrubs and medical procedures were carried out by surgeons in their regular clothing. The hazards of operating without sanitized attire were unknown. However, as awareness of infections increased, surgeons and other medical personnel started taking special measures to help prevent harmful bacteria from spreading. Hence, the white cloth known as an “apron” came into existence. This apron, instead of reducing the spread of bacterial infections, acted as a catalyst in the process. The apron accumulated blood from surgeries and the sweat of the medical staff, transferring infectious bacteria from one patient to the next. Due to these reasons, the apron soon fell out of practice. Next, the white robe was introduced in the 1900’s. The white color represented cleanliness, hygiene and professionalism. This white lab coat is still in use today and normally worn over regular clothing. It has now become a standard form of clothing for doctors. The nurses, however were mostly women and wore a dress made of 100 percent cotton material. These dresses were only available in a limited number of colors such as green, blue or white. Most nurses considered these dresses old fashioned and uncomfortable. They found it pretty difficult to perform everyday tasks in these dresses. The use of gowns and lab coats started. They were usually white colored long coats or gowns. The gowns were white due to the reason of being able to distinguish between clean and dirty areas. However, there was a glare of the lights reflected off the white colored fabric material. This glare caused eye fatigue in surgeons. So with the passage of time, green colored surgical coats were preferred over white colored scrubs. These green colored coats are often referred to as “Surgical Greens”. This color is in use in medical institutions even today.

Green colored scrubs soon started to seem dull to the medical surgeons and doctors. Hence, the modern medical Scrubs Inc came into existence. Due to the availability of scrubs in multiple colors, hospitals and healthcare centers can now designate many different specialties within the medical profession. Some employees even wear printed scrubs which track with the latest trends in the fashion industry.
