The foundation of a house is the first thing laid before construction begins. It is generally made of cement or concrete, so the insulation is on the outside rather than within it.

The foundation insulation is very important when constructing a house,The Importance of Foundation Insulation Articles especially if the house will include a basement. The reason people use insulation around the foundation of their homes is to prevent several things; it is used to keep the cold air out, prevent water from getting in and causing moisture issues like mildew and musty smells. There are also a few different things to use as foundation insulation. One of these things includes Styrofoam, which is wrapped around the foundation on the outside to prevent cool air from being able to enter the house. This also helps prevent water from getting in. When insulating the foundation, some people opt to put wood behind the Styrofoam and perhaps some plastic coverings for more protection against the cold.  Something that one might also want to consider when insulating the foundation is to follow up with basement wall insulation—interior, exterior, both of which are important to making sure the house is going to be properly heated for the winter, while at the same time, keeping the heating bill as low as possible.  To assist the foundation insulation, one might want to consider installing foam board insulation. This generally goes between the drywall in the basement and the paneling on the outside of the house. There are always little cracks that may be between the house and the foundation, and the foam board insulation is a great way to help that out.  A type of foundation that is good to use and also looks nicer than basic concrete is stone. This is concrete based, and set up much like a brick wall, but instead of piling bricks with concrete in between, it is piling larger stones. It really gives the look of the foundation a nicer affect. It can’t be stressed enough of how important waterproofing is to a house and basement. It is the whole point of foundation.  There are several materials that can be used to prevent leaking. Construction adhesives can be used to put plastic coverings between the walls and the foundation. It is also recommended to put some sort of cocking sealant around where any cracks may cause water or air leakage. Something that no homeowner wants to have to deal with is mold and mildew removal. One thing that would come in handy to prevent mold and mildew is the use of a dehumidifier to relieve the space of unwanted moisture.  There are so many things to consider when going about foundation insulation, which include where the house will be located. Weather patterns, climate and its surroundings are big details that cannot be overlooked when construction is underway. These are factors that will decide how much, if any, insulation will be needed. The client might only need insulation to prevent water leaks, and not cold air if they live in warm places like Arizona, California or Florida. Because most of these places have hurricanes and typhoons, extra insulation will be needed for excessive amounts of water and wind.
