A pearl is formed when a foreign body gets inside the shell of an oyster or mollusc. This foreign body irritates the mollusc and it encases it in layer after layer of a substance called nacre.

Pearls that are formed in this manner are extremely rare and because of their rarity they are also very expensive.  The types of pearl are usually found by professional divers who dig them out of the sea.  Nowadays the most common type of pearl worn is the cultured pearl.  These pearls are cultivated by man copying natures technique and can be grown in wither freshwater or seawater.  These cultured pearls are very popular as they do not differ much in quality or appearance than wild pearls.

The colour of a pearl will depend on where it was grown and what mollusc created it.  Pearls naturally come in different colours and these can range from shades of white,Why We Wear Pearl Jewellery? Articles pink, cream, green, bronze, aubergine, silver, grey and black.   The price of a pearl will depend of three factors: lustre, smoothness and the shape.  The lustre of a pearl is a combination of the inner glow and the surface brilliance of the pearl.  The smoothness of the pearl relates to the actual surface of the pearl and pearls that are organically grown are never flawless.  The shape of the pearl will greatly affect the price.  The more perfectly round a pearl is the more it will cost.  When you are buying pearl jewellery you must always look at the pearl’s lustre, surface and shape to decide its quality.

Pearl jewellery is an enduring classic and is suitable for any occasion or celebration.  You can wear your pearl jewellery with formal eveningwear, with a business suit or even just casually with jeans and a jumper.  Pearl jewellery like pearl earrings is an ideal choice for brides on their special day or for a young woman looking to add a touch of class and elegance to her outfit.  Pearl jewellery is also a great gift idea whether it is for a birthday, Christmas, sweet sixteen or and anniversary.

Pearl earrings are the most common type of pearl jewellery and when you decide to add a pair to your jewellery collection you need to choose an earring style that suits you.  Your face shape and neck will affect this decision.  People have different face shapes and therefore will suit different pearl earrings.  Generally pearl earrings come on four different styles: Clip earrings, chandelier, drop earrings and stud earrings. By choosing the right style of pearl earrings you can only enhance your beauty.  Chandelier earrings are longer and look best with square, rectangular or triangular faces and also people who have a longer neck.  People with a shorter neck should avoid these types of pearl earrings as they can make the neck appear even shorter.  Remember, long earrings for a long neck and shorter earrings like a stud are a good choice for a shorter neck.
