A wise teacher once instructed his young Christian student to ask why he wanted to get baptized in the first place. There was tension between the two while the young student pondered it for days, then weeks, and finally months. He read all the scriptures and tried to follow them daily. Finally, the wise old man came to him and said that he was now ready to answer.
The boy looked up, but he could not answer. He had made no progress in his spiritual journey, except a kind of regression in certain trivial manners. The old man, we’ll call him Petey, said to the young boy, “Jesus is the cornerstone that the builders rejected.” It was then that a light went off in the boy’s head, and he realized that he had not brought Jesus into his life. Jesus had been knocking, trying to get in and take over the boy’s sins and errors and problems and curses and foul-ups and serious situations, but the boy was trying to do everything on his own without Jesus’ help. He then realized that baptism was meant as a symbol of Jesus taking the blame for us, and that we were supposed to try to follow in his footsteps, but only with his help. It was then that the boy realized the purpose of his baptism, and he thanked the old man for not telling him sooner because the lesson remained with him his whole life.
Stories like these are the stories that inspire people to send baptism invitations. If people understand the true nature of a baptism, they’ll be happy to provide the greatest possible assurance to their visitors about the freedom-giving properties of God and the good-limiting properties of not accepting Jesus. Jesus is a friend and savior; therefore, his lessons are good and proper and affect us when we need them to at every aspect of our lives. Baptism invitations are at a fork in the road when the person is finished discovering the meaning of baptism and wants to look for the invitations that will make his friends proud.
The real purpose of baptism invitations is to tell your friends how great you’re feeling now that you’ve got Jesus in your life. It would take a lot of phone calls and conversations to get the word out without any formal proclamation or announcement to alert your friends to the joy of your baptismal ceremony, celebration, and joyous walk in the Christian life.
