If by chance you don't come across your friend on the first try, it's possible that they are a friend of a friend. Be sure to check all your friends, friend's lists to see if he or she is on there. If by chance finding old friends becomes a little more difficult you should try to find any old contact information. Granted you might not have it, but if you do there are plenty of reverse telephone search sites out there. Just do a Google search and plenty of services will come up. Utilizing these could provide you with a new phone number or address for your friend.

Another choice is posting an old school photograph on Facebook. It's possible that someone else knows where this person is and where you can find them. Sometimes people don't remember a person until you provide a visual aid. Plus some of the other people will help you start finding old friends in the photograph.

You could also take a different path if nothing is working and place a short add in the "Lost and Found" section of the local newspaper. Seriously, several people have done this and found the person they were looking for all along. Keep in mind it's not necessarily how you find old friends for free, but it's another solution.

Over the years many people move or just want to broaden their horizons elsewhere. If you think this might be the case then looking for ex-pat clubs could help.
