People can not give an exact answer when they are asked about hockey's origin. However, most people accept the saying that ice hockey stems from the United Kingdom. Later it came into North America. In the early days, people who lived in the England's military depot in Canada liked this sport very much. In McGill University, some students started the ice hockey game in 1870s. They made some related regulations and these regulations were called "McGill Regulation". In order to adjust to the regulation, now people replace gum-elastic ball with the hockey we use today. In addition, every team has 9 members. The Amateur Hockey Association of Canada was created in Montreal in 1885. It is the first nationwide hockey institution in the world. Then the institution formulated that a team was formed with 7 members. At the same year, National Hockey League was established in Lake Ontario. It is composed of four teams.
In 1890s, this sport spread into America. Johns Hopkins University and Yale University played a famed hockey game in 1895. Although hockey is a recreational project in Canada, America set up a first national and professional hockey league. This league is set in 1903 and its head office is in Houghton, Michigan. All the teams of Canada and America belong to the league. It was expanded twice three years later. In 1910, NHL was set up officially.
In 1920, Antwerp Olympic Games first listed Men's ice hockey formally. However, in Chuck Nicks Olympic Winter Games we first saw hockey game in 1924. In 1998, Women's hockey appeared in Nagano Olympic Winter Games.
If we see hockey's history in Olympic Games, we will find that Canada and the Soviet Union are the strongest countries in the world. Among the 19 hockey games, Canada and the Soviet Union have won 14 times, which is very surprising. Canada got the first four championships in the Olympic Games. In fact, among the first seven Olympic Games, Canada got sax championships. But, in 1956, Canada did not get champion. The championship they won in 1952 was their last one in the Olympic Games. In 1956, the Soviet Union's hockey team first got the championship in the Cortina Winter Olympics. Then they won the hockey game in Winter Olympics in the next 10 games. In 1960 and 1980, America won the gold medals in their mainland. The Soviet Union disintegrated after the Albertville Olympic Winter Games, which was held in 1992. This means that they do not dominate the hockey game in the Olympic Games any longer. In the Nagano Winter Olympics, professional players were allowed to attend hockey game. That is 1998. Many giant stars participated in the Olympic Winter Games to play ice hockey. So hockey experienced a huge progress and development. Women's hockey was allowed in 1998. In Nagano Winter Olympics women attended the hockey game in the Olympic Games. This time, America got the champion and Canada was failed. That is to say, in the history of Women's hockey, the United States won the first gold medal in Nagano Olympic Winter Games. Nowadays ice hockey has become a very important recreational sport in the world. This is only a short presentation on hockey, and you can find more interesting things about hockey.
