Any reputable Brazilian Jiu Jitsu instructor is not going to hand over a BJJ blue belt without the individual earning it. The individual has to be extremely focused and consistent to get to blue belt level in a short amount of time. The instructor is responsible for making sure that the steps needed and time frames are in place to get to the students goal.

The class will revolve around showing the student new techniques, positions, and attacks while going over prior material from recent classes to reinforce memorization. The instructor should not go overboard with details at first in order to keep the novice from getting frustrated and overwhelmed.

Top priority is to keep the learning experience enjoyable, but the ambitious goal of getting a BJJ blue belt in six months will require some tension from the training sessions. A good training atmosphere will keep the student involved and wanting to come back on a regular base.

The next three components are vital to the ability of the student to be able to put it all together and get results. If the new student wants to get their blue belt in 6 months, they need to make sure that all three of these elements are in place. These will be used in all the higher levels of Jiu Jitsu.

Drilling techniques will provide the student with muscle memory and let the individual not have to think the move, but just do it. The best way to drill at first is to work a combination of techniques per position that will go into one another.

Focusing on a greater amount of rolling from positions rather than starting from the knees will provide a better understanding in each of the core positions and help the student familiarize themselves with positions they don't like to be in. There needs to be some training from the knees, but the majority should be concentrated on positions taught in that selected class. Rolling provides the timing needed to adapt and adjust to the constant movements and attacks.

The last component fall squarely on the student and is something they have total control over. Stay consistent with your training and you will see amazing gains in your Jiu Jitsu game. If you are going to train 3 times per week then make sure it happens. The more regimented you are the better when trying to remember and learn new techniques. Taking a week off now and then will interrupt the muscle memory and timing you have built up from a structured training routine.
