The best image you can build for yourself in Texas Holdem is that of a tight aggressive player. Not only because it’s the best style there is, but because it allows you to take advantage of many concepts like: bluffing, semi-bluffing, slow-playing, getting a free card and others. Whereas if you are a loose player, you won’t get the respect and the extra money from your opponents in such a situation.

However, even though I recommend on reading Holdem books and content websites constantly, you should develop your own style. Playing the Sklansky way or Dan Harington’s game won’t work for you. If you try to imitate someone, you won’t be as good as they are. Develop a style that fits your motives of playing: if you’ve come to enjoy they game, you will play looser. If you are playing for money you’ll have to play tighter. Adjust your style to the specific situation. Most of the books describe a very tight game because these are the games played by the pros. If you aren’t a pro, you’ve probably noticed that the games you are playing are much looser. They have more ‘maniacs’ and ‘calling stations’ than described in these books. Therefore, you have to adjust your game. Loosen up a bit but stay tighter than most of the players at your table. Remember that it is hard to bluff amateurs; they usually don’t care what you have.

Another important thing is to vary your game. Even though it’s important that you raise with a pair of aces because that kind of hand doesn’t like many opponents, once in a while just call with it. After showing that move you will be feared many times when you just call with your drawable hands. Once in a while raise with 65 suited pre-flop even from an early positionComputer Technology Articles, and in general try not to be predictable.
