Its Reggie Bush time

In the 2008 NFL season the Reggie Bush mph display at one point read a cool 22 on the way to a famous Monday Night Football punt return touchdown against the Minnesota Vikings. It was reported at the time as being only fractions slower than the World record pace Usain Bolt set in the 100 meter sprint final at the Beijing Olympics. So I started wondering, if Reggie Bush can do that in a full football uniform just how fast can the speedster go this year with a lighter kit?

The following is a formula I have put together that helps to explain how Reggie might just beat his previous best time.  It goes something like this:

Reggie Bush speed = Personal criticism by the media + restricted ball handling / natural ability x desire to prove a point

By this calculation I predict Reggie Bush is due a very big game in the near future and with a big game comes big speed.  Why?

Reggie is fully committed to the Saints organisation, is blessed with incredible natural athletic ability and has been restricted to bit part roles so far this season.  His overall 2009 contribution has been easy going rather than explosive.  However this is not for the want of trying.

In week 9 by way of example Reggie helped his team to victory with a respectable 7 receptions for 37 yards against the Carolina Panthers and was handed the ball twice out of the backfield for a further 16 on the ground.  All decent enough numbers from a man who has bought into the multi attack team ethos the Saints have applied. 

So who cares so long as the Saints are winning right?  Right.  But you know, you can only hold nature back for so long and right now Reggie is like a rocket poised on the pad with engines burning.  It won’t be long before thrust beats gravity and Reggie heads for the stars. 

On the football field that day may already be pencilled in as the day the Reggie Bush highlights reel receives a new addition.  He is overdue another trademark punt return and in the process could well close in on that Bolt record.  That moment could come as early as next Monday night as the Saints host the New England Patriots on Monday Night Football.  On such occasions do the big time players rise to the surface and, so long as he is healthy, I wouldn’t put it past Reggie breaking one to put all those doubters to bed.  He is after all made for the big occasion.

Whenever Mr. Bush has the ability and desire to get it done and break his speed record for good measure.  Just remember that when he does finally take a long one for 6 be sure to check your speed gun for the Reggie Bush mph may be faster than you think.
