There has long been a raging debate between smartphone enthusiasts over which manufacturer’s wares are the best.

Whilst this is a question which is largely down to personal preference,An Overview Of The iPhone 4 And The Blackberry 9800 Torch - The Manufacturer's Flagship Devices Articles and strictly speaking cannot be answered for sure, this article will compare the iPhone 4 and the Blackberry Torch on some of their key features, to decide which one comes out on top, on paper at least.

Screen

The iPhone 4 has the highest pixel resolution of any smartphone currently available, but that on the Blackberry Torch is still highly functional and provides an impressive user experience. The iPhone boasts a pixel resolution of 640x 960 on its famous “retina” display, compared to the 360x 480 on the Torch; but remember, the screen on the Blackberry Torch is slightly smaller, so to compare the resolutions on face value would be inaccurate. All in all, the screen of the iPhone 4 is superior thanks to its resolutions, larger size, and higher general specification. It also offers faster response times than the Torch, thanks to a more powerful processor under the hood.

Camera

On the surface, the cameras on these devices seem very similar. Both have 5 megapixels and operate at a resolution of 2592x 1944 pixels. Therefore, both produce images with pleasing results. Additionally, both handsets can also shoot video. The iPhone 4 offers slightly better 720p HD capture compared to that of the Blackberry Torch, which shoots VGA video. The iPhone 4 also has the added benefit of the AppStore which offers numerous downloadable apps in the photography category which takes advantage of the hardware on offer. Therefore, thanks to the higher video resolution and availability of apps, the iPhone 4 wins the camera category on paper.

Operating System

The operating system is really down to personal preference, as this is responsible for the overall user experience of the phone. The iPhone 4 runs iOS 4, which features the classic interface which presents users with neat rows of apps, which can also be grouped together for convenience.  The Blackberry Torch runs Blackberry OS 6.0; however an upgrade to the new 7.0 version is on its way. This is an impressive interface, and offers a totally different experience to the iPhone. Again, there is now way of distinguishing which is better between the two, as each essentially does the same tasks, but in a different formant, so the operating system is really down to the personal preference of the individual user.

Of course each of these handsets offers much more than the categories mentioned in this article, they are both the manufacturers’ flagship smartphones after all. Whichever you prefer, you can be sure that both the iPhone 4 and the Blackberry Torch are superb phones, and offer some of the best smartphone technology, and indeed the best user experience of any smartphone out there. As an added bonus, each of these handsets are available on a number of UK network deals which allow you to get the handset for free.
