In fact you can now call your alarm systems control panel if you are out of town to check on your home and see if everyone is home OK. The list of things that a security system will do now just goes on and on and there is no need to worry if the power is turned off because they all come with a battery powered back-up system that can run the homes security system for weeks if need be. Other options include heat sensors for fire detection that signal the system to wake everyone up as it simultaneously calls the emergency personel. Carbon monoxide sensors that also tell the system to sound the alarm as it calls for help and even sensors that can let you know if cold temperatures are risking your pipes being ruptured. The fact is that if you don't have ADT decals on your windows and their sign in your yard you are just taking your chances now.
