With advanced video game consoles changing the video game industry, and an increased demand for games that are used on web and mobile device platforms, companies that produce popular video games are expanding and therefore looking to hire talented individuals that can play a part in shaping the future of the whole world of video games. Here are some steps that can help you get the career in the video game industry that you have always wanted to have.

1. See which area of game development interests you the most.

Much like creating a successful movie, making a good video game will require a team of dozens of individuals that can contribute their unique qualities and skills to the project at hand. The actual game design is a process that often takes months to complete. It will require people to design the graphics and the video used in the game. Others will need to compose the music and sound effects. Some team members will be responsible for coding the actual levels in the game, while others will write the software that makes the game run and load the right modules when necessary. Game Testers are necessary for quality control purposes in the final part of a game's design process.

1. See if you have the relevant skills and experience.

Different positions demand different types of knowledge, skills, and experience. Video game programmers will need to know several programming languages and be willing to learn new ones when necessary. Most companies today have a careers section on their site that you can check out and submit your CV to them instantly. Job fairs and events related to the gaming industry are also great places to meet with representatives of the industry who can help you find work in this field.

1. Don't get discouraged if you don't succeed at first.

Sometimes it will take a few months of efforts, even if you have stellar qualifications. Start by applying for entry-level positions, like  game QA testing. This will let you build up some experience in the industry, even if it is not the job that you want to do for the rest of your career. Search for smaller companies and start-ups that are hiring. While the pay may not be as great as with some of the big houses out there, smaller companies are a great place to make contacts in the gaming field, and gain much needed experience.
