After receiving the Kindle as a gift, I discovered the device did not include a back light or other type of lighting capabilities to illuminate the paper-like display. The screen works great in just about any setting, including locations where glare would be a problem with other portable media devices. The device, however, is virtually impossible to read in the dark. Fortunately, the lighted cover provides the perfect solution.
The cover has a retractable LED light which slides out from the top right hand corner of the cover. The cover has an ingenious gold-plated hinge system which conducts electricity from the device's battery to the LED light. The cover has no loose wires, no plug-in wall adapters and no extra batteries.
The strong contoured, pebble-grain leather exterior cover serves as a great protective cover for your device. An elastic strap holds the covers together should you accidentally drop or mishandle the device while travelling. The cover also serves as a great splash guard from liquids but does not serve as a waterproof case.
The inside cover is lined with a soft microfiber designed to protect the screen. The cover can be folded back to let you hold the Kindle with on hand. In this folded back position, the LED light can still be retracted for use.
The cover is available in Black, Burnt Orange, Chocolate Brown, Hot Pink, Steel Blue, Apple Green and Burgundy Red.

There are a couple of differences between the lighted cover and the regular non-lighted cover. The lighted cover weighs approximately 2.1 oz more than regular cover and its spine has a little added thickness. These differences are due to the lighting components inside the back cover. I find these differences negligible compared to the benefits received from the light.
